a weekend.

We went on a last-minute trip this weekend. We
left Saturday,
stopped in Half Moon Bay to buy some steak,
headed inland to Pescadero to visit the goat cheese farm and get some of the artichoke bread [there's a nice video on there about the area] and cream of artichoke soup,
checked in at the lighthouse hostel,
went for a hike up the hill to Wilbur's Watch,
heard what Chad thought was a coyote and I thought was a dog across the field from us,
were rained on,
watched a fantastic sunset which was only slightly marred by the curmudgeon who wouldn't stop talking about how he'd seen way better,
told one of the staff about the coyote and she said it was the MOUNTAIN LION that's been lurking around lately and Chad said it would only attack small children and she said, no, it'd definitely go after an individual but probably not the two of us,
snacked on the bread and cheese and soup,
read for awhile,
cooked up our steak mushrooms and garlic,
watched the stars from the hot tub, then
slept like the dead.

Sunday we
slept in,
drove into Pescadero for cheese danishes and coffee,
sat on the tafoni at Pebble Beach,
drove down to the first organic strawberry farm in California for a basket and OMG THOSE TRUFFLES,
headed into Santa Cruz, where it was hot and sunny [20 minutes north, where we'd been, it was grey and windy and FREEZING],
gave insurance info to the girl whose car Chad banged his door into and marred,
nearly sweated to death trudging around the flea market [scores: old silver and turquoise cowboy charm bracelet and a costumey modern necklace],
ate Pink Godzilla sushi for lunch,
scored a blue gingham pinafore at the vintage thrift,
tried to go to the beach but it was too hot and the neighbors have some crazy permit regulations,
headed downtown for more thrifting,
stopped by the surprise antiques fair [note to self: arrive earlier next time, 2nd Sunday monthly],
scarfed down some Coldstone,
got a parking ticket [$35] on our expired meter [apparently they go til 8 there],
drove home, and
passed out.

To be, or not to be in Denmark

  • Jul. 13th, 2009 at 7:03 PM
Ok, I just announced publicly that I'll be spending all my time on a particular art project, and then this came up.

Dance Dance Immolation is scheduled to run at Smukfest in Denmark in early August. Sadly one of the crewmembers just had to drop out for health reasons.

As far as skillset goes, I'm the nearest replacement. This particular job involves training a bunch of locals to help us run, so even if others have similar skills it's a time commitment they don't want to deal with. Plus I have the time and can afford to pay for the non-refundable expenses.

We are dealing with plane tickets that have to be purchased NOW NOW NOW so I have to come up with some kind of answer for the team pretty damn quick.

Most of this trip is spent in the woods of Denmark with long haired Danish rocker kids, but there will be a day or two in the cities.

I'm leaning towards going but that makes the schedule for my other art project really tight. I still think of that as my first commitment. [info]raindrift argues that my other art project is easy to do, but he's [info]raindrift and a veteran at knocking together bizarre hardware at short notice. This is my first time trying to do something more complex than IKEA furniture. Hm.

Never rains but it pours.

Fire Arts Festival is now a four-day extravaganza starting this Wednesday, July 15th, and ending Saturday July 18th. Interpretive Arson will be there with 2πr.

This is one of the most accessible and fun ways to see a lot of the fire art being done in the Bay Area, in just one evening. It's engineering! Art! And contributes to the warming of our planet. What's not to love?

This year it's held in a space 3x bigger than last year, and there's FREE parking and a FREE shuttle from BART.

Tickets get more expensive as the week progresses, and Saturday is a guaranteed sellout. So get your tickets now, now, now. I'd like to see some of my geek friends out there for once....

Had my first gallery showing downtown over the weekend! I sold two pieces! which is exciting because I didn't think i'd sell any. I only put em down at 25 bucks which I thought was a good incentive price.. however I didn't know the galleries cut was 40%... but all in all it was more about getting exposure (haha.. no pun intended) than selling...
but anyway..

You know the overpass where Pole Line passes over I-80? For the past month, I have occasionally seen a guy standing on it holding a sign to be visible to eastbound traffic. I haven't seen him during the middle of the day, only in the early morning, around 6am. I'm kind of curious what his sign says, but I'm assuming it's religious and/or political. If you're a nut holding signs on overpasses early in the morning, what else would you have a sign about? I would ask him what's on his sign, but I don't want to end up getting a Jesus lecture, or hearing about conspiracy theories or whatever. This week, I saw him twice, maybe he is coming out more frequently.

Redback and Home-Grove

A smell of condoms stains the nose,
thirst creases the tongue,
I shake; and

I leave long before daylight, no problem.
At the pressure of his hips I

was a mandible. I locked
around that sharp-boned boy.
He tried to stretch one narrow leg--
my jaw-body stopped it when it touched me.

Now he is the gristle and lengths
of tendon that appetites leave behind.

Disarticulate in the sheet-folds.

Everytime I walk through the house
the darkness and the heat

grow thick, tough like foliage,
the house a grove of doors.

Desire moves elsewhere fast,
no more than he was man to me

when I'd become an entrance for all
hes, theys, and other warm shapes that
struggle a while before they don't.
They are faint against the body

and the memory
once I have fumbled

past the doorknob and the cold
outside sets on my shoulders.
It's very light.

Last weekend I met up with James in London. First thing we did was check into the Holiday Inn in Camden, where we saw a bunch of cosplayers and furries in the lobby. We then got something to eat at a nearby restaurant, and afterwards went to see Public Enemies. It was decent enough, though much too long, and I sort of fell asleep in the middle. Overall, I think I enjoyed the 1930's setting more than I enjoyed the movie itself. It made me want to see something like The Untouchables; maybe I'll look for it on DVD today.

After the movie, we sat in the Costa across the road from Koko, waiting for the gig to start. The bill was Tim Exile, Plaid, Clark and Luke Vibert. I guess we were mostly there for Clark, but also looking forward to Plaid. We got in shortly before 9, and waited around for the first act to come on, whilst appreciating again the kind of music that is played in Koko before electronic gigs. The first act were a duo who weren't on the bill, but they were pretty interesting. According to last.fm, they're called Grasscut. Tim Exile was up next, and he put in a really interesting performance, all rapid hand movements and knob-twiddling. Plaid, by comparison, were disappointing. They played a much dancier set than I was hoping for, and despite having heard a lot of their stuff, I didn't recognise most of what they played. Next up was Clark, who also played a very dancey set. His dance stuff seems to work better at incredibly high volumes than Plaid's does, though. I was a little disappointed that he didn't play Ted, which arguably would have fit in well, but Growls Garden and Rainbow Voodoo were amazing. After Clark was Luke Vibert's DJ set. It was past 2am by this point, so we decided to call it a night. According to a review of the gig on last.fm, he did some stuff with The Tuss' Rushup Edge, which would have been pretty cool to see, I guess.

James and I had some breakfast at a fairly nice place on Camden High St., and then made our way back to Paddington. We both got home at around 5pm; I had picked up Bibio's new album 'Ambivalence Avenue' on the way. It is amazing.

This week at work has been pretty uneventful. My boss is on holiday, and one of the guys in our department was sick for two days, so it's been pretty quiet. I'm cool with that, though. Anyway, I was going to try and get a haircut today, so I should get ready to leave the house. Bye!

Canada Fail

  • Jul. 11th, 2009 at 9:47 AM
Oh wow, so much for writing about the rest of my Canada trip, huh? I thought I might be able to avoid falling into my usual trap of only updating about the first half of my holiday, by updating while I was over there, BUT IT TURNS OUT I WAS WRONG. I'm pretty sure I can't be bothered to write about it now, but here are my photos of the holiday, just in case you didn't see them on one of the various other social-networky sites I linked to them on. And if you didn't then I guess we're not such good friends after all, huh?

My week at work after getting back from holiday was a pretty tough one. I mentioned that I was working on Sunday, the day after I got back, I think. I also did a bit of overtime on Tuesday and Wednesday; just a couple of extra hours each night, but at this point the jetlag had really caught up with me. I woke up on Tuesday morning at 3am, and couldn't get back to sleep for well over two hours. Running on about 5 hours' sleep, I had to deal with some extreme heat (It was warm enough outside, but we don't really have such as working air-conditioning in our offices, so it was kind of horrible) and long working hours. We were over the milestone by Thursday, however, and things got a little easier.

I'm going to split things into two posts!!

HEY FELLOW NERDS

  • Jul. 10th, 2009 at 2:38 PM
Is anyone doing the midnight Harry Potter thing? I have Wednesday off, so I am pondering whether I want to do it. In my advanced age, I'm not sure if I can handle staying up so late. I'm not even sure if there are still seats available.

Midnight showings are always fun, but they're much improved when you have people to help pass the four hour or whatever wait beforehand.

Have not been able to capture photos so much from the few work days I have attended. So to me, it doesn't feel like so much progress, yet when I compare them to the last photos I posted, I can really see the progress.
